Emotional Literacy

Emotional literacy support involves programs and strategies designed to help individuals, especially children and young people, understand, express, and manage their emotions effectively.

What is Emotional Literacy?

Emotional literacy refers to the ability to recognize, understand, and express emotions in oneself and others. It is a crucial skill for developing healthy relationships and coping with life’s challenges.

ELSA Program

The Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) program is a widely recognized initiative aimed at enhancing the emotional well-being of children and young people. It involves training teaching assistants to provide tailored emotional support to students facing difficulties in understanding and managing their emotions. The program is supported by educational psychologists who offer ongoing supervision to ensure high-quality support.

Key Components of Emotional Literacy Support

  • Understanding Emotions: Teaching children to identify and label their emotions is fundamental. This can be achieved through activities that encourage discussion about feelings and the use of emotional vocabulary.
  • Empathy Development: Encouraging children to consider the feelings of others helps build empathy. Activities like reading stories and discussing characters’ emotions can foster this skill.
  • Practical Activities: Engaging children in games and creative tasks, such as making emotion masks or playing charades, can help them express and understand different emotions.
  • Supportive Environment: Creating a safe space where children feel comfortable sharing their feelings is essential. Adults can model emotional literacy by openly discussing their emotions and encouraging children to do the same.
